The Science Activation Program engages Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)* involved in NASA science with learners of all ages in various learning environments. SMEs collaborate within Science Activation teams to share their expertise and experiences both in community events and behind the scenes. SMEs mentor learners, provide input on learning materials, present at workshops, and more! This map showcases the distribution of experts across NASA science disciplines, including early career scientists who are interested in learning more about opportunities to engage learners of all ages in learning and educational outreach. *What is a NASA-funded SME?

Subject Matter Experts (SMEs): Scientists and engineers with bona fide expert knowledge to ask compelling scientific questions and then find ways to answer them within the objectives of NASA SMD. These include:

  • NASA-funded scientist or engineer working on a NASA project or mission within the last 5 years in the fields of Astrophysics, Biological and Physical Sciences, Earth Science, Heliophysics, and Planetary Science, OR
  • Early career researchers (within 10 years of their degree) working under NASA-funded science projects or missions are included, OR
  • Peer-reviewed publication within the last 5 years involving the science, data, or technology of NASA’s science missions and research projects.
